The New Orleans Saints trimmed their initial 90-man roster down to the regular-season 53-man max. Some of these cuts were surprising, to say the least.

Like every other team, the New Orleans Saints had to delivery the crushing news to over 30 players that they’re being waived. While many of these were expected, each team seemingly has a few players that fans were expecting to see on the Week 1 roster.

The Saints are no different. They trimmed their roster down, leaving just two tight ends and continuing the tradition of keeping a tight end on the roster. New Orleans will also be taking six receivers into their Week 1 matchup.

Here’s a quick roster player count for each position.

Quarterback: 3

Running Back/Fullback: 4

Wide Receiver: 6

Tight end: 2

Offensive line: 9

Special Teams: 3

Defensive line: 9

Linebackers: 6

Secondary: 11

This breakdown was expected.

We forecasted about each of these, except possibly having five safeties. The two tight end strategy was also one that took many off guard. However, Payton’s been a mastermind at putting together teams in the past, so no one is doubting his decision making here.

That said, let’s dive into three players that were cut/waived that we couldn’t have predicted.
