New Orleans Saints 2017 season outlook

2 of 5

Saints first four: 2-2

@ Vikings 9/11

The Saints open on the road against a Minnesota team that played solid defense last season. Offensively they are challenged behind Sam Bradford, but they will pose a solid test. I think the Saints new look D will be up to the challenge and Brees thrives often against the best defenses. For the first time since the 2013 season, we will be over .500 at any point in the season, winning this one on the road.

Patriots 9/17

They follow that with a home game on a short week against the defending champion New England Patriots. This is a Patriots team who will (a) be a little upset at losing their season opener at home against a team they’ve owned in recent years, (b) have a defense that comes in thoroughly embarrassed, (c) is coming off a 10-day break, and (d) has a receiver who is particularly motivated to do well. Doesn’t bode well for the home team. Loss there.

@ Panthers 9/24

Game three is on the road at Carolina. I expect as usual the Saints will play them well, but Carolina has our number. Of all the division teams, this one we match up worst against on a regular basis due to one person – Greg Olsen. Assuming Cam Newton and Olsen are healthy, I see us struggling here.

@ Dolphins (London) 10/1

After that, it’s off to London (assuming the NFL doesn’t give that game back to Miami to help them in the weeks post-Irma) to face the Dolphins. Jay Cutler scares no one at QB and they lost their potential starting LB. This on a defense that was nearly as bad as ours last season. Win.

This puts that Saints in a pretty good spot after the first 4 games, 3 on the road. If we make it through this portion of the season at .500, Who Dats should feel good because it gets better.
