Round 6, Pick 196: Montae Nicholson, S, Michigan State
Nicholson will fall this far in the draft due to lack of production in college. There’s no “wow” factor with him, so don’t expect him to change a defense on Day 1. However, his 6’2″, 212 pound frame is huge for a free safety, and his selection here would give the Saints an additional player to compete in camp. He would also round out the team’s attempt to draft young in the secondary.
You can’t teach size, but you can teach toughness, which Nicholson seems to lack. A nickel back position seems to be his calling, which is great for the Saints as anything will help at this point. Nicholson’s 4.42 Combine 40 could come in handy as he helps the Saints cover all of those wildly quick and talented NFC South wide receivers.
