Predicting the Saints 2016 rookie class production

Daniel Lasco, Running Back
With their seventh-round pick, the Saints picked Cal’s Daniel Lasco. But why would they pick a running back when they already have more than enough options already? First of all, health has always been an issue for both Mark Ingram and C.J. Spiller.
Second of all, Lasco plays the role of a dynamic player who can make the big plays on the ground, but also catches passes out of the backfield, which is a very important role in a Sean Payton offense. It’s a role earlier filled out by guys like Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles, and one we all thought would be filled again with the arrival of C.J. Spiller. Sadly, Spiller had an extremely disappointing season and did not live up to the huge expectations Saints fans had before the season. So, the spot might be up for grabs.

Lasco will have to compete with Spiller, Travaris Cadet and Marcus Murphy, and it’s not unrealistic for him to see at least some playing time in the offense this season. It will be hard to project as Sean Payton really likes Cadet, and the Saints seem determent that Spiller will have a role next season and maybe play like the old dynamic Spiller we all hoped he would be last season.
Lasco definitely has a lot of potential and could develop into a very productive player in Sean Payton’s system, but he will have to fight hard for playing time in his first season. However, he could add a lot of value in special teams.
Projection: 16 games played (0 starts), 13 carries, 70 rushing yards, 0 TDs; 20 receptions, 180 yards, 2 TDs
