The New Orleans Saints have signed running back Vick Ballard to a reserve/future contract, according to the NFL transactions wire.

The New Orleans Saints added their 13th player via a future contract Wednesday with Vick Ballard, who was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.

Ballard had a very productive rookie season, earning a starting nod and totaling 814 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while adding 17 catches for 152 yards and another score through the air.

Since 2012, Ballard’s production has dipped off thanks to a series of significant injuries, which ranged from a torn ACL to a torn Achilles tendon.  He missed 15 games in 2013 and the entire season in 2014.  He was released by the Colts last September after the two parties reached an injury settlement.

With a handful of New Orleans Saints running backs (Mark Ingram, C.J. Spiller and Marcus Murphy being an exception) set to become free agents, adding depth does no harm.  The deal with Ballard is basically just a chance to impress at camp with the hopes of earning a spot on the roster.  When healthy, the kid proved himself very capable.

The New Orleans Saints also signed CFL linebacker Erik Harris, as well as wide receiver Kyle Prater this week.
