I know most are saying, “But Garrett Grayson is on the roster.” While I am not dismissing that fact, I would urge you to look at Sean Payton’s track record before brushing this off. Under Payton, the Saints have typically carried three quarterbacks on the active roster for the past several seasons.
Luke McCown‘s future is severely in question after landing on injured reserve with season-ending back surgery. McCown will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. Matt Flynn, who will turn 31 in June, is a very serviceable veteran to back up Drew Brees if he’s needed.

Brees spoke highly of being able to learn from Doug Flutie in his rookie season in San Diego, and the transition from college to the pros is often difficult. Remember, Grayson wanted to learn from Brees. You don’t want to be in any situation where Flynn or Grayson would have to see action on a permanent basis, but you do want to be covered in case that situation arises.
