Alright, before we get too anxious, let me just say a blanket statement that Drew Brees is going to be the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback. However, the quarterbacks battle behind him is what is going to be most intriguing for the Saints. You have the seasoned veteran (Luke McCown), the up-and-comer (Ryan Griffin), and the new blood dubbed as the ‘heir to the throne’ (Garrett Grayson).

Last year, we saw Ryan Griffin perform formidably through training camp and the first couple of preseason games, but undoubtedly lost his seat as becoming the primary backup to Drew Brees. The Saints signed Luke McCown to a one-year contract during the offseason, and now starts a big battle of the backups.

It’s common knowledge that at least one quarterback will be out of the mix with final cuts for the 53-man roster, but the ultimate question remains: Do the Saints roll with three quarterbacks again? That likely depends on what Garrett Grayson does. One believes that he has a roster spot set in stone. After all, the Saints used a third round pick, their highest on a quarterback since Archie Manning, to nab the Colorado State prospect.

So, this battle will likely come down to what quarterback can outperform the other, and even with that being said, there’s not a guarantee that the Saints will carry three.

Now, there are a host of other battles that are sure to be interesting to watch unfold, like linebacker and the offensive line, but none of these are as intriguing as the previously mentioned battles. Only time will tell who ultimately wins, but over the next several months, we’ll all keep a keen watch on how things unfold.

Which battle are you most interested in watching? What players are you banking on as the early frontrunners?
