New Orleans Saints offseason workout program dates announced

The NFL has announced the offseason workout program dates for each respective club. The New Orleans Saints will start their season program on April 20, 2015.

First Day – April 20

OTA Offseason Workouts – May 26-28, June 2-4, June 8-11

Mandatory Minicamp – June 16-18

There’s three phases to this nine-week program, which is strictly voluntary.

The first phase holds activities for two weeks that focus on strength and conditioning, and physical rehab.

The second phase is a three-week program which has on-field workouts. Drills, player instruction, and team practices are conducted. However, there’s no contact allowed, or offense versus defense drills.

The last phase happens for the next four weeks. This is referred to as OTAs, or organized team activities. A total of 10 days are permitted for this stretch. Once again, live contact is not permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.

Under phase three, a club is also able to hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players.

In addition to this program, a mini rookie developmental camp can go for seven weeks starting on May 11. No sessions are able to occur on the weekends minus a post-draft NFL Draft rookie minicamp. As per Greg Bensel, senior VP of communications and broadcasting, the rookie camp will occur from May 15-17.

Voluntary veteran minicamps are being held by seven NFL clubs this season, which are granted to clubs that hired head coaches after the conclusion of the 2014 season. Those teams are the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, and San Francisco 49ers.

Training camp dates for the New Orleans Saints at the Greenbrier facility in West Virginia will come at a later date. However, for those wondering, the team started there on July 24th last year.
