New Orleans Saints fans were pretty wound up Wednesday afternoon in regards to the Brandon Browner and Tramon Williams news. The two cornerbacks were in the Crescent City yesterday meeting with Sean Payton, Mickey Loomis and company, but nobody seemed to be able to get their hands on an update until today.
Well, now it is being reported that the Saints offered Browner a deal that is worth over $5 million per year. However, there is no word on Williams at the moment.
Browner was with the New England Patriots in 2014, but after refusing to take a pay cut, the Pats reportedly declined to pick up his $2 million option. The 6-foot-4 corner has dealt with injury and suspension issues (nothing too serious) over the past few seasons, but when healthy and well-behaved, he has proven to be a top-tier cover corner.
Brandon Browner is one of the most physical defensive backs in the NFL, but it has also led to a high amount of penalties, which is something that will have to be worked on if he does join the Black and Gold.
He is a back-to-back Super Bowl champion, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy most recently with the Patriots and before that with the Seattle Seahawks. In 45 games played, Browner has tallied 142 combined tackles, 45 passes defended, 11 interceptions, three forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns.
Assuming he stays healthy, his man-to-man presence opposite Keenan Lewis would without doubt drastically improve the Saints’ struggling secondary. Brandon Browner would be a top-notch acquisition in the Big Easy. He could not only help on the field, but he could also help lead in the locker room as an incredible veteran presence.
