After the departure of center Jonathan Goodwin to the San Francisco 49ers, the Saints needed an answer at center. Olin Kreutz was facing a big decision after spending the previous twelve seasons (1998-2010) with the Chicago Bears. The team actually offered him a contract worth $4 million to remain a Bear in 2011, but Kreutz declined.
On August 5, 2011, Kreutz would sign a one-year, $2 million contract with the black and gold to fill in. As the 2011 season got underway, he’d play in four of the first six games, and then news broke that Kreutz quit football, walking away from the team. When asked, he said that he ‘lost his passion for football’, and would be officially waived from the team on October 22, 2011.
Olin Kreutz would never play another snap in the NFL.
