It was arguably the biggest head scratcher of 2014, as the Saints defense went from the tops of the league to the bottom of the barrel under Rob Ryan.

The Saints went from being the league’s worst in 2012, nearly turned it around to the league’s best in 2013 (4th ranking), and majorly regressed in 2014 to nearly finishing back at the bottom (31st ranking). The only saving grace for last year’s team was the fact that the Atlanta Falcons were simply more atrocious.

The defense that promised to have a different philosophy and generate turnovers only had 17 total to show for, which was a wretched 28th in the league. It ultimately killed the team, who finished with the second worst giveaway/takeaway ratio in the NFL with a -13.

This season, we hope the kinks are worked out. We’re hoping that injuries don’t plague this team. We’re hoping that the defense gets the ultimate attention and upgrades through free agency and the draft. We don’t want just any player, but we want to bring in the right specialized talent at linebacker and cornerback.

We just want to see a glimmer of the 2013 Saints defense. We’re aware the Saints defense doesn’t have to be spectacular (see 2009), just make plays.

Just Do Your Job.
