Former Ravens running back Ray Rice won his appeal against the NFL on November 28th, which immediately reinstated him and permitted him to sign with any team as a free agent. As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New Orleans Saints were one of four teams to express interest in Rice.
"At least four teams have expressed interest in recently reinstated running back Ray Rice, including Indianapolis and New Orleans, though the Colts are not expected to pursue him, according to multiple league sources. Two sources declined to identify the other two teams that have been checking into Rice.Multiple NFL executives have said the profile of a team willing to sign Rice would be one that is a contender, with a strong-minded head coach, with injuries in its backfield. The Saints — fighting for first place in the NFC South, with multiple banged-up running backs, with a fan base that would not be overly concerned what NFL commissioner Roger Goodell thinks — would qualify, although they are not expected to pursue him."
The report says that New Orleans is not likely to pursue Rice at this point, but it’s still a bit interesting that his name was paired to the Saints in the first place. The Saints have a plethora of depth at running back with Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas, Khiry Robinson, and Travaris Cadet, but the interest might have been because of Robinson’s inability to get on the field.
Rice, who turns 28 in January, is said to have stayed in ‘great shape’. The Indianapolis Colts are the other team identified as being interested in Rice.
A second chance could be in Rice’s future. We have witnessed players like Michael Vick, who was suspended and imprisoned in 2007, make the most of another shot. It just takes the right organization with the right staff to make it work.
With everything that went on with Ray Rice, would you welcome him in black and gold?
