Thoughts from Ian

GB over SEA

This is the game of the week and I’m so happy we kick the season off with it. Aaron Rodgers had his season interrupted by injury and no defense in the league will be spoiling his return. This won’t be quite the shootout that many fans will be imagining. Just a tough physical game and both of these teams can play that way. I’m siding with Green Bay with the victory.

NO over ATL

You’ve watched Hard Knocks I assume? If you didn’t, just know that the offensive line will be slightly better and the defense won’t be any better than last year. The Saints had a great off-season thanks to Magician/MacGyver/GM Mickey Loomis. With a re-tooled defense and an even scarier offense than last season, the Saints are the team to beat in the NFC. Rivalry games are always close, but Saints win this game.

CIN over BAL

Ray Rice is out this game. Joe Flacco and Andy Dalton aren’t impressive quarterbacks (Brad Johnson is also a Superbowl-winning quarterback people) so this game should be decided on the ground. I think Giovani Bernard has a good day running the ball.

CHI over BUF

Marc Trestman’s offense will be on full display against a Kiki Alonso-less Bills defense.

RG III should thank Almighty Roger (or whoever makes up the NFL schedule) that they get a soft start to the season. Except for Jadeveon Clowney.. and J.J. Watt.. and a fresh Arian Foster.. maybe this game will be tougher than I thought. I believe this game will come down to the last drive and I trust RG III more than I trust Ryan Fitzpatrick.

KC over TEN

The Chiefs have given their heart to Alex Smith but Jamaal Charles is the soul of this team. He’s nearly unstoppable if you let him get going early. Hopefully that offensive line will let him be great. The Titans will get worn down and that Chiefs defense will stall their offense. Chiefs win.

MIA over NE

Week 1 is a strange week in the NFL. Strange things happen to the Patriots when they visit the Dolphins. Brady and the crew will have a good first half. Then the Dolphins wear them down with their rushing attack to steal the win.

OAK over NYJ

Nobody wants to be a Raider? I find that hard to believe. I think MJD shocks everyone and proves that he’s back to prime form. The jury is out on Derek Carr. The Raiders made upgrades to the offensive line and added Justin Tuck and Lamar Woodley with first round pick Khalil Mack. My question: can the Jets be better than they were last year?

PHI over JAX

Jacksonville fans will get a front row seat to watch Chip Kelly’s fast offense which will be much better this year. Nick Foles will keep everyone believing he is this generation’s Kurt Warner for at least one more week. Don’t count out the Jaguars this year. They won’t finish in the top half of their division, but this is a team on the rise. Blake Bortles and Winston Guy will be big playmakers.

PIT over CLE

I’m not sure Cleveland can compete without Josh Gordon. Sure they have Jordan Cameron but this offense isn’t nearly as lethal without him. They won’t be able to keep up with the Steelers. Ryan Shazier is everything I thought he would be in the NFL. The Steelers still need have problems in that secondary though. It’s between the Bengals and the Steelers who will win the AFC North.

MIN over STL

Adrian Peterson runs all over the Rams. I wonder when they will put in Bridgewater? I am interested in seeing what Norv Turner can do with Cassell and Patterson though. It’s a big blow for the Rams to lose Bradford for the year. I don’t think anyone was expecting big things from them but their ceiling is definitely lower now with Shaun Hill.

SF over DAL

I’m a believer in the Cowboys having a great offensive line this season. The Cowboys have managed to get worse on defense. The 49ers have lost several defensive starters to injury (Bowman and Dorsey) and Aldon Smith to suspension. Depleted defenses vs loaded offenses. This will be a shootout with the weapons that the 49ers & Cowboys have at their disposal.

TB over CAR

Maybe I am overestimating the “Logan Mankins effect”. He plays with attitude and will make everyone on the line better. Anybody notice how Lovie Smith has managed to clone the Bears passing attack? (Mike Evans, V-Jax, Austin Seferian-Jenkins all 6’5!) McCown will demolish the Panthers weak secondary.

DEN over IND

Denver is much better this year. Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware are proven pass rushers. Aqib Talib and TJ Ward are big additions to the secondary. I’m not buying the Montee Ball hype though. Indy might have been able to stop them last year, but Peyton is hungry for his second Superbowl win. Andrew Luck won’t cower to the Broncos though. He and this Colts team will throw everything they have at the Broncos.

ARI over SD

I think this is Ryan Mathews’ year to breakout. I also like Andre Ellington and that Cardinals offense to have a better than average season as well. Big losses on the defense for the Cardinals will hold them back. I’ll give the edge to the Cardinals on this one because I still don’t like San Diego’s defense.

DET over NYG

The Giants looked god-awful in the preseason with their starters in. What is going on with this team? The Lions are so ready to make a run at the playoffs again and I think they roll right over the Giants.
