Garrett Hartley could never have imagined he would have such an important role in Saints history, partly because he wasn’t even drafted in the 2008 NFL draft. He signed with the Denver Broncos but was cut before the start of training camp in July. He didn’t even get signed by the Saints until October 2008.

He was 13 for 13 on his field goal attempts that year and was then suspended for the first four games of the 2009 season because he tested positive for a banned stimulant, Adderall. He remained inactive until the 12th game of the 2009 season when he kicked four field goals, including the game winning field goal against Washington to extend the Saints winning streak.

Hartley kicked a 40-yard field goal against the Minnesota Vikings to send the Saints to their first Super Bowl in franchise history and converted the most field goals from 40 yards or more (3) in Super Bowl history.

His erratic play in the years that followed led to him being released from the team last season. He is now an unsigned free agent.
