The Michael Irvin Rule

Back Story: Before there was Roddy White, there was Michael Irvin. Irvin was a physical wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys in the 90’s, and served as one of the ‘Triplets’ along with quarterback Troy Aikman and running back Emmitt Smith. Irvin had much success as a receiver, primarily because of his ability create separation/push off from opposing cornerbacks. Irvin was very vocal about this ability, often getting into the other cornerbacks’ faces throught the game.

The Rule: Two new penalties came about from Irvin’s play – offensive pass interference and taunting.
