It’s hard to put a positive spin on the injury that occurred at the Saints facilty during a routine workout with Brandon Thomas. The former Clemson offensive guard was highly touted as perhaps the third-best guard in the May draft, but it looks like he’ll have to put those hopes off for another season.
ESPN’s Mike Triplett dropped the unpleasant news on us a bit earlier today at twitter:
That pretty much sums up the situation. It was a non-contact drill, so I don’t expect goons from 345 Park Avenue to swarm the Saints facility and start handing out sanctions. There’s a bit of concern at Nola.com that perhaps the Saints practice field is to blame, but I doubt it.
That would indeed be a scary thought if true. However as one Saints fan pointed out our practice field is not exactly Fed Ex Stadium. (now dat’s an even scarier thought) Poor guy. Thomas will lose out in a number of ways, including paying hospital bills without an NFL paycheck.
The New Orleans Saints also lost out on a potential prospect in the draft, and so did 31 other teams. Life of course must go on, and the same is true of the 2014 NFL draft, and NFL football. There’s a very slim chance Thomas will be picked up as a red shirt in the upcoming draft, but he better not count on it.
Let’s just wish the kid a speedy recovery. Maybe the Saints will get a shot at him in next year’s draft.
