E. J. Gaines, CB – Missouri

You can never have enough kickers!” is what Taco from the show The League used to say. I do agree with him, if we replace “kickers” with “cornerbacks”. I went back and forth with this pick: cornerback or outside linebacker? Outside linebacker or cornerback? The verdict: cornerback. The Saints already have four OLBs on the roster and one on the practice squad – better add someone in the secondary.

E.J. Gaines (5’10”, 190) is a competitive player with good tackling skills who ran a 4.49 40-yard dash. Due to his college defensive scheme he plays better in zone coverage but while he might not see many defensive snaps he should be a good special teamer. In his last year with the Tigers he had 75 tackles, 3 passes defended and 5 interceptions.

Bleacher Report’s Ian Wharton says about him:

"Gaines was able to experience playing against top-level competition every week in the SEC, and he played well in his senior season. His best scheme fit will be in a zone-base defense, preferably Cover 2, where he can focus on redirecting the receiver and using his ball skills to make plays. A master of none, Gaines will need to play special teams to get on the field, but he’s good enough to stick around the NFL as a depth player."
