Life without Sproles

Who Dat Nation has been spoiled the last three years with the ultimate scat back in the league in running back Darren Sproles. He’s torched linebackers, squeezed out of defensive linemen’s arms, and juked the socks off of defensive backs. There are rumors that his time in New Orleans may be coming to an end this off-season.

Sproles rumored departure from the Saints offensive scheme would certainly hamper head coach Sean Payton’s play calling, but definitely not force a change of scheme.

In Sproles first year with the Saints, he accounted for 13% of the Saints passing yards, 28% of their rushing yards, and 13% of the Saints touchdowns.

Compare that to this past season where he accounted for 12% of the team’s passing yards, 15% of their rushing yards, and only 6% of the touchdowns scored in 2013.

While still effective, Sproles is not getting any younger and tight end Jimmy Graham is in his prime and worthy of a big deal. Sproles is set to count $4.25 million against the 2014 cap and the Saints still need to resign key free agents like center Brian de la Puente, safety Malcolm Jenkins, and tackle Zach Strief.
