Saints QB Coach Joe Lombardi to Lions

Consider rumors or sources to be pretty good things these days as to what happens next. As per multiple sources, including ESPN Insider, Chris Mortensen, the New Orleans Saints will be looking for a new quarterback coach, as Joe Lombardi is expected to be hired by the Detroit Lions as the new offensive coordinator.

Lombardi, who has spent the past seven seasons with the Saints. He was promoted to the quarterbacks coach position in 2009. It’s hard to ignore the impact of Lombardi, as Drew Brees passing numbers speak for itself.

For the Lions, this is a huge win, as the team recently hired Jim Caldwell as their head coach. Lombardi traded one #9 (Brees) for the other #9 (Stafford), so to speak, as the Lions continue to get Matthew Stafford even more help, whether he likes it or not.

As for potential candidates for filling the Saints vacancy? We’re not sure at this moment, but the track record for recent coaching spots on the New Orleans Saints looks attractive, as Sean Payton has seen Dennis Allen (Oakland), Doug Marrone (Buffalo), Curtis Johnson (Tulane), Aaron Kromer (Chicago), and now Lombardi all emerge to bigger and better things. Look for Pete Carmichael to be on this list soon.
