Just as everyone thought, Cameron Jordan, not Akiem Hicks would be fined $10K from Thursday Night’s game between the Saints-Falcons.
Jordan finished the night with 2.5 sacks, and was reportedly fined from the league for his roughing the passer penalty on Matt Ryan call in the first quarter of the game. The Akiem Hicks play was very similar, as they both slapped Matt Ryan’s facemask, but Hicks did not get flagged for a penalty. Obviously, these were not intentional plays, but they are both penalties in today’s game.
Let’s also not forget how many analysts loved to compare the Akiem Hicks non-call to the Ahmad Brooks call on Brees in the final minutes of the 49ers-Saints game. If Drew Brees is too short at 6’0″, I guess Matt Ryan is too tall at 6’4″.
Hicks had a career day in sacks with 1.5, and along with other younger talent like Cam Jordan & Junior Galette, they are flourishing this season.
Don’t be surprised to see Jordan appeal, as do most players that take a hit to their pocketbooks with these fines. After all, it’s not like Jordan has a history of this.
We understand that player safety is a concern in today’s NFL, and it’s certainly a ‘hot button’, but where in the world is the consistency?
Along with the helmet to helmet penalties, the competition & player safety committees have some challenges ahead of them this offseason to try to figure this thing out without ruining the tempo of the game completely.
