If you have followed along with us in the past, you know exactly how we felt when the New Orleans Saints signed former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Keenan Lewis in NFL free agency.
We’ll provide a quick recap—Lewis is a stud. A+ signing.
It turns out we are not the only folks who feel that way about Lewis joining the black and gold. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan says Lewis was the best defensive free agent on the market:
"“I’m so excited about Keenan Lewis — everything about him since the day we signed him,” Ryan said, via the Times-Picayune. “He’s got so much ability. The sky is the limit for this guy. He’s going to be fantastic for us. We’re so excited about him. He’s smart, he’s tough, he’s long. And he’s a local hero. You’ve got to love this guy. In my opinion, I honestly feel we got the best free agent out there on defense.”"
We’re not going to go as far as saying that thanks to big names like Cliff Avril and Dashon Goldson, but Lewis was right there with them. More importantly, Lewis was a perfect fit for what the Saints needed—a physical cover corner that can play the run well.
Lewis is a No. 1 corner in New Orleans like he would be on a good amount of teams in the NFL. He’s well past Jabari Greer and Patrick Robinson on the depth chart—the former because of his aging skills and the latter because of his maddening inconsistency.
The Saints now have a building block at cornerback. Next to him rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro will help to usher in a new era for the Saints defense.
