Round 2, Pick 64:  Charles Brown, Tackle(USC)

Selected by head coach Sean Payton, he said that Brown had “heavy hands” and was thought to be the next step for the offensive line.  However, for being a second round pick, Brown has only played in 13 games so far and started 5 of those.

His development has come at a slow pace and everyone is trying to forget the game last season where he started against the St. Louis Rams and had a sub par performance.  So far he hasn’t started any games for this season and is looking more and more like going into the bust category.

Selections the Saints could have made:

Brandon LaFell, Wide receiver(LSU)-if Payton wanted an offensive pick he could have gone with an offensive weapon for Drew Brees.  While his first season wasn’t impressive(38 receptions for 468 yards and 1 touchdown), his second season saw him have 36 receptions for 613 yards and 3 touchdowns.

LaFell seems to have found his stride this year with 9 receptions for 155 yards and one touchdown in only his first two games.  He was chosen by the Carolina Panthers in the second round with pick #78.

NaVorro Bowman, Linebacker(Penn State)-while Bowman was chosen in the third round with pick #91 by the San Francisco 49ers, he has helped become part of a number one defense and registered 200 tackles, two sacks, and one interception.  This is someone the Saints could have surely used in a linebacking corps still trying to find their identity.

Round 3, Pick 95:  Jimmy Graham, Tight end(Miami)

This is one that I won’t touch with a ten-foot pole.  I’ll be the first to admit that this selection puzzled me at first and had me nervous with his lack of football experience coming out of college.  Graham however has proved to be the hidden gem the Saints are famous for finding and an offensive weapon that Drew Brees loves going to.  It’s helped Graham garner 143 receptions for 1,822 yards and 18 touchdowns.
