Brees actually applauded both Tanner and Roby for their contributions so far in camp and in preseason.  He raved about Tanner’s work ethic and said Roby is a “true football player in every sense”.

Although the Saints defense was patched with a few injuries they did well.  Defensive end Will Smith highlighted the game with a sack of quarterback Tom Brady that caused a fumble which linebacker Curtis Lofton recovered.  Lofton by the way gave the defense a “C” on their performance.

Rookie defensive tackle Akiem Hicks did very well in his debut with constant pressure up the middle, side, and everywhere else getting a quarterback hit and a forced fumble.  He got his hands on a pass by backup Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallet causing an incompletion.

The one thing that was emphasized by interim head coach Joe Vitt and several players was that they needed to clean up the penalties they made including two by linebacker/defensive end Martez Wilson which helped the Patriots convert into first downs.

The Saints will now return home and begin preparation for their third preseason game on Friday, August 17 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The game will be played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and is scheduled for kickoff at 7:00 p.m. CDT.
