The New Orleans Saints have selected defensive tackle Akiem Hicks with the 89th pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Hicks is an LSU transfer who finished out his college career at the University Regina of in Canada. He was invited to the NFL Combine.
At the Combine, Hicks posted a 5.23 second 40-yard dash, 26 reps in the bench press, a 31.5 inch vertical jump, and a 4.86 second 20-yard shuttle.
This past season, Hicks lead the team with 42 tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, three pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
While Hicks is said to have great measurables, size, and light feet, he can also get caught upright and in double teams. He is described as being an average run stopper and still very raw but the Saints staff is very high on him.
I really thought the Saints would try for someone like Billy Winn of Boise State who can play defensive end or defensive tackle. We’ll see what defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo can do with him.
