New Orleans Saints face uphill battle in free agency

3 of 4

Depressing for sure, but one hope would remain for the Saints if they can’t sign Lofton.  The trip to the Lions for Hawthorne hit a small snag when the team was able to re-sign linebacker Stephen Tulloch to a five-year deal.

To add insult to injury, reports are that Hawthorne had no clue that it had happened because he was actually in the air when the signing happened.  If Lofton is too expensive, then the Saints could try again with Hawthorne.

The Saints also had Houston Texans free agent tight end Joel Dreessen in for a visit but he also left without a deal and was scheduled to visit the Cincinnati Bengals this week.

Dreessen had a solid year for the Texans and could be a viable replacement for current Saints tight end David Thomas who suffered two concussions and was placed on injured reserve last season.

Much to the dismay of everyone though, no word has come from the Saints facility on the status of the free agents, including the most important one of all, Drew Brees.
