Possible plans for the New Orleans Saints defensive line during free agency

Like I discussed recently with WIST Radio’s 690 AM  The Sports Hangover’s Gus Kattengell, the “Heavy Lunch Bunch” experiment with the Saints has probably come to an end.  Gone are the days of stocking up on the 375 lb. linemen.

Now I know every team has a Vince Wilfork, B.J. Raji, or a Shaun Rogers, also known as “run stoppers”.  But, to play the four man pass rush like Spagnuolo will want, the Saints will need to get athletic, lean, and quick up front.

With the draft it’s tricky to try to bring in talent and hope they make a huge impact, especially since the Saints won’t pick until late in the second round.  With the new defensive scheme, the Saints may try their luck in free agency to bring  immediate results.

The Saints I believe will try to restructure defensive end Will Smith’s contract to clear up cap room, which shouldn’t be a surprise to Smith.  Some think he may be on his way out of New Orleans, but if  that happens it’ll be by his choice.

The Saints also have of course Jordan, defensive end Junior Galette, nose tackle Sedrick Ellis and defensive tackle Tom Johnson.  With these players forming a decent start, the  Saints could pick up a piece or two in the market.
