New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees Releases Statement Regarding CBA

1 of 2

In a statement released to The Associated Press via the NFL Players Association on Wednesday, New England’s Tom Brady, Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning and New Orleans’ Drew Brees said: “We believe the overall proposal made by the players is fair for both sides and it is time to get this deal done.”

The statement continued: “This is the time of year we as players turn our attention to the game on the field. We hope the owners feel the same way.”

Ratifying this new agreement certainly seems imminent now as this latest statement indicates. It’ certainly been a long time in the making as the lockout has now run over four months in duration.

A major sticking point had been how to decide how to split the NFL’s nine billion dollars in revenue fairly between owners and players. Finally progress was made when the players accepted a smaller share (48%) of the revenue with the understanding that owners had to spend considerably more on players salaries.

The next issue slowing progress became how to form the new rookie wage scale. Essentially all first round picks would get four year deals with an option year, which is the source of the problem.
