Herzlich can play the run very well, rush the quarterback, and can still cover tight ends and backs out of the backfield. Herzlich is 6’4″ and 244 pounds and is a very strong player as he had 29 bench press reps at the combine. In 2008, Herzlich was a finalist for the Butkus award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top linebacker.
Herzlich missed the entire 2009 season due to a rare form of bone cancer known as Ewing’s sarcoma. He overcame the cancer and was back playing for Boston College in 2010. His progress thoughout the season was very impressive as he continued to get stronger, quicker, and faster as the season progressed.
If Herzlich would have been available for the 2009 NFL Draft, he was projected to be picked in the first 15 picks in the first round. Herzlich was drafted by Omaha of the UFL, but he seems to be even more determined now to show that he can play in the NFL.
In my opinion, Herzlich would be a great free agency addition to the New Orleans Saints. His struggles to overcome adversity and to return to the high level of production on the football field he had prior to his battle with cancer reminds me of another battle.
The battle New Orleans has been in for the past few years. People all over the country said New Orleans couldn’t recover from the devastation that Hurricane Katrina had left in her wake.
They said New Orleans would never be the same. I am happy to say they were right. New Orleans is better than it was before and is constantly improving just like our beloved New Orleans Saints! WHO DAT! GEAUX SAINTS!
