New Orleans Saints: Team Signs G Terrance Metcalf To 1-Year Deal After Releasing Rookie G Joe Tonga

The Saints have come to terms on a one year deal with veteran guard Terrence Metcalf, formerly of the Chicago Bears, after releasing rookie guard Joe Tonga.

Metcalf was drafted by the Bears in the third round of the 2002 draft and appeared in 85 games with 25 starts including three play-off appearances while with Chicago.

He was released in the spring of 2009 before catching on with the Lions and participating in their training camp only to be released again during Detroit’s final roster trim before the start of the season.

Joe Tonga went undrafted this year after finishing his collegiate career at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was signed after being invited for a try out at rookie camp last month.

Metcalf’s signing indicates the Saints desire to bolster depth on the offensive line,  he has not been brought in to try and compete for a starting role.
