Saints Free Agency Update: Backup QB Mark Brunell Visiting With Jets

Rich Cimini of NYDailyNews.com has confirmed the Jets are currently hosting Saints veteran free agent quarterback Mark Brunell.
A 14 year veteran Brunell has spent time playing with the Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins and has been with the Saints over the last two seasons after losing his starting job to Jason Campbell.
The Saints aren’t too willing to bring him back at this point as he will turn 40 this September and they currently have a young quarterback in Chase Daniel, the former Mizzou star, that they are extremely high on.
However they have shown indications that they would still like to keep three quarterbacks on the roster showing interest in former Carolina starter Jake Delhomme earlier this off-season.
Delhomme had scheduled a visit to New Orleans but never made it after agreeing to a contract with the Cleveland Browns where he has a chance to become the starting quarterback.
Delhomme would have been relegated to Drew Brees’ backup had he decided to sign and would never have been in contention to take over the starting role.
There have been no indications by the Jets that they will offer Brunell a contract but the meeting eludes to the franchise’s intent on adding a veteran backup to aid the development of second year QB Mark Sanchez.
In 14 seasons Brunell has thrown for 31,928 yards, 182 touchdowns, 107 interceptions and has a career pass rating of 83.9.
