Saints Free Agency Update: RB Mike Bell Signs Offer Sheet With Eagles, RB Justin Fargas To Visit

Mike Bell, a restricted free agent, has signed an offer sheet with the Philadelphia Eagles. The offer is a one year contract worth roughly 1.7M, a cool 500k more than what the Saints had tendered him.

The Saints however have the right of first refusal and are granted a week to match the offer made to Bell or let him walk, Bell himself has said he has no preference to which team he plays for moving forward.

Bell came on strong at the start of the season including a 143 yard rushing performance opening day against the Detroit Lions, however he had nagging knee problems towards the end of the season which resulted in a reduced role and less production.

Bell rushed 654 yards on 172 carries with five touchdowns during the 2009 season.

Free agent running back Justin Fargas is currently meeting with Saints brass. Fargas was released by the Oakland Raiders earlier this off-season after spending the last seven seasons there before he was due a 1.7M roster bonus.

During the 2009 season Fargas rushed for 491 yards and three touchdowns in twelve games before missing the final two with a sprained knee.

Fargas was scheduled to meet with the Saints before Bell signed the offer sheet with the Eagles so to note the Saints are not viewing Fargas as a replacement for Bell.

Certainly the Saints would be more interested in retaining Bell than Fargas at this point as Bell is the fresher of the two players and had more production last season.
