On Tuesday New Orleans Saints cornerback Jabari Greer injured his groin during warm-ups before morning practice.

The injury, though not to be serious at the beginning, turned out to be a hernia — so Greer sought out treatment from Dr. James Andrews.

Yesterday he flew to Philadelphia meet with the renown sports surgeon, opting for a sports hernia procedure to repair the damage.

Greer will likely be out the next month while he recovers.

Interim head coach Joe Vitt says Greer has a chance at returning to the practice filed in time for the Saints week four preseason game against the Houston Texans.

But the team maintains that he will definitely be ready for the season opener against the Washington Redskins.

Greer has been with the Saints since coming over from the Buffalo Bills in free agency prior to the 2009 season, and he has developed into one of the teams best defensive players.

He has started 37 of a possible 48 games over the last three years, totaling 43 pass deflections, five interceptions, and 155 tackles.

With Greer now out most of the preseason, the Saints will likely rotate Johnny Patrick, Marquis Johnson, and rookie Corey White with the first team defense.

The Arizona Cardinals may have made an early indication as to whom they could expect to start at quarterback this season, naming Kevin Kolb as the teams starter in this Sunday’s Hall of Fame game against the New Orleans Saints.

Kolb was signed by the Cardinals in the off-season last year to be the teams starter, but no off-season, thanks to the lockout, and injury problems caused him to miss seven total games and play in a less than desirable manner.

In nine starts, Kolb completed only 57% of his passes for 1,955 yards and nine touchdowns.

Backup John Skelton stepped in for Kolb during his time missed with injury, and by all accounts played better than his predecessor in limited action.

Skelton started seven games and passed for 1,913 yards and eleven touchdowns, but more importantly went 5-2 over his seven starts — hence the quarterback controversy.

Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenthunt declared the competition between Kolb and Skelton open this off-season, making the starting job available to the best man under center.

So far indications are that it will be Kolb’s job to lose, starting Sunday against the Saints improved defense.

As reported earlier, the New Orleans Saints have temporarily lost their starting duo of cornerback’s as both Jabari Greer and Patrick Robinson suffered injuries.

The team is currently holding training camp at their Matairie practice faciltiy.

Robinson inured his shoulder Sunday, and while he has still practiced on a limited basis to this point, yesterday marked the first time he missed a full practice since sufffering the injury.

Greer came up lame Tuesday morning before the start of scrimmages with an apparent groin injury and did not return to the practice field.

As of yet Greer has not been evaluated further by team doctors, but the injuries to both players appear to be minor and should not keep them sidelined for long.

But given the risk of re-injury both are being held out, leaving their playing status in the Saints upcoming Hall of Fame game against the Arizona Cardinals in question.

For now the Saints will continue practicing without Greer or Robinson, leaving the door open for younger talent to showcase their talents in front of coaches.

Marquis Johnson, Johnny Patrick, and rookie Corey White are getting their shot at running with the first-string offense now that the “1′s” at their position are down.

Free agent signing Elbert Mack has also been thrown into the mix with the second team unit.
