Report: New Orleans Saints held workout with Baylor QB Bryce Petty

According to reports, the New Orleans Saints held a private workout with former Baylor star Bryce Petty, one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft after Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota.

Initially, Bleacher Report noted that the Saints are targeting Petty and Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson.  A possible workout with Grayson may have taken place as well.  However, the only thing that can be confirmed is the Petty workout that took place.  Plus, I really don’t think Coach Sean Payton is going to go out of his way and tell the public which exact player(s) his team is after.

At some point, the New Orleans Saints do need to start thinking about life after Drew Brees, which is tough take in, but very necessary.  Will it be in this year’s draft?  We’ll have to wait and see, but the Black and Gold haven’t had much success with quarterbacks in the draft.  We can’t count out the free agent market either when the time comes.

Bryce Petty is a promising prospect though.  He’s got great size, a strong arm, respectable mobility and outstanding timing and accuracy.  However, he tends to lock onto a target before the plays begins, but that is certainly something that can be fixed under good coaching.  This is a kid that could potentially mold and learn behind Brees for a couple of years.

From BaylorBears.com:

"2014 (Senior): Played 12 of 13 games as starting QB, led BU to Big 12 championship and named honorable mention All-America… Finished 10th in 2014 Heisman voting… Won 2014 Bobby Bowden Award (by FCA) and named 2015 Cotton Bowl MVP… Set four single-game, four bowl, two single-season and 11 career records (including two Big 12 and one NCAA) during 2014… Threw for 3,855 yards and 29 TDs on 270-for-428 passing with seven interceptions, ran for 101 yards and six TDs… Earned All-America honorable mention from Sports Illustrated and unanimous second team All-Big 12 honors"

Petty was a 2013 All-American and holds 31 school records, two Big-12 records and one NCAA record.  The New Orleans Saints currently have nine picks in the 2015 NFL Draft, which is set to kick off in Chicago next Thursday.  The Baylor standout could be a guy they target with one of their two third-round picks, but it also wouldn’t be a surprise if they pass on a quarterback this year.  Drafting one is not something that should be forced.
