The New Orleans Saints today announced that they have re-signed embattled kicker Shayne Graham to continue in his role as the Saints kicker for the 2014 season. Grahan had been released this past Saturday along with young free agent Derek Dimke, leaing the Saints temporarily without a kicker on their final 53-man roster. Graham of course was brought in last year to replace former 2009 Super Bowl season hero Garrett Hartley, who was released late last year after several key misses.
Graham had been thought to possibly be on the way out after a shaky Training Camp and Pre -Season that included a missed extra point against the Rams. But, Payton decided to stick with the veteran Graham over Dimke, which is exactly what New Orleans Advocate Saints beat writer Ramon Antonio Vargas had told me two weeks ago while I was in Metairie covering the remainder of Saints Training Camp.
The Saints released quarterback Ryan Griffin to make room for Graham, and assuming he clears the waiver process, he may end up on the Saints’ practice squad. However, that’s a big maybe, as Griffin played well during the preseason and may possiby be scooped up by another team. At least we got our answer about carrying only two quarterbacks this season, even if it may be a little late.
As far Graham, don’t be surprised if he DOESN’T remain the kicker all year. Sean Payton has shown that he has little tolerance for inconsistency on the part of the kicking game; and given that Graham has already been released once, it’s not far-fetched to think that it could happen again.
