As the Tuesday afternoon deadline to cut down the roster to 75 approaches, Sean Payton announced during his press conference that the New Orleans Saints have decided to waive three more players following Monday’s practice at team facilities in Metairie, LA. WR Andy Tanner, S Ty Zimmerman and OT Ty Nsekhe appear to be the odd men out as the Black and Gold continue efforts at building their ideal 53-man roster.
Tanner has been with the team since 2010 with practice squad status dominating the majority of his career. With exceptional depth at the wide receiver position, it was really tough to see a scenario where the former Midwestern State Mustang would make the final cut. He’s got the hands and brains to be a nice WR 3 or WR 4 on another team, but the talent level in the Big Easy just made it hard for Coach Payton to find a place for him.
Ty Zimmerman signed with the Saints this year as an undrafted rookie following the 2014 NFL Draft. The Kansas State product had an excellent college career in the Big 12, but with guys like Rafael Bush, Marcus Ball and Pierre Warren sitting behind Kenny Vaccaro and Jairus Byrd, Zimmerman’s chances were slim to none.
Nsekhe bounced around a couple of practice squads in 2012 before eventually making his way into the Arena Football League. The 6-foot-8 offensive lineman was battling with Tavon Rooks and Bryce Harris for a spot behind Terron Armstead and Zach Strief.
Trimming down the roster will continue for the next several days, eventually churning into a final 53 for the Aug. 30 deadline.
