Last year the Saints defense had an incredible turnaround, mainly because of the man with the awesome hair and the awesome belly. This year, they might be even better. Cameron Jordan, Junior Galette and Akiem Hicks are three rising stars wha can’t wait to be on the field, with their hands in the turf, to wreak havoc on the opponent’s backfield.
Taking down the quarterback is the main goal on every single snap for the guys in the front seven and last season Jordan and Galette did that pretty well, combining for 24.5 sacks. Who will put up better numbers next season? Let’s see what the three aforementioned Saints bring to the table and why each of them could excel in this category.
Jordan was the brightest star last season when he recorded 12.5 sacks, good for 5th-best in the NFL. Add to that 11 solo tackles and 4 pass deflections. He had a huge impact on the field and his level of confidence, as well as his leadership, grew game after game.
Galette joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent and has been willing to prove everybody else that he belongs there ever since. His motivation his sky-high and you definitely see that on the field: his extreme effort and his passion led him to a breakout 12-sacks season.
Even if he “only” had 4.5 sacks in 2013 Hicks showed huge potential playing opposite to Cameron Jordan. In case you don’t know him well check out this great article by a fellow WDD writer, Barry Hirstius. Next year he could be a beast as opposing OL coaches will have to double-team Jordan more often than not.
