Players to target with the Saints First Round Draft Pick
The New Orleans Saints rebounded from what many would consider a lost 2012 season, as head coach Sean Payton returned in 2013 and helped the Saints get back to the playoffs.
Despite the successful turnaround, the Saints didn’t go far in the playoffs thanks to a so-so defense and an offense that appeared to once again sputter outdoors on the road. Drew Brees and co. did prove they can go to someone else’s house and take care of business in the wild card round with a win over the Philadelphia Eagles, but their tough loss to the Seahawks in Seattle potentially showed they need to toughen up to make a serious run going forward.
New Orleans’ latest playoff loss could be what ended up pushing Payton to alter his offense a bit, as it appears the Saints are headed for a more balanced approach. The team still has star tight end Jimmy Graham franchised and intends on locking him up on a long-term deal, but otherwise could slowly be moving toward a roster that is less reliant on the passing game.
The release of slot receiver Lance Moore and trading of running back Darren Sproles were the writing on the wall, as Drew Brees isn’t getting any younger and the Saints know they need to be less predictable to be better for the long-term.
With the 2014 NFL Draft coming in May, the Saints will have the opportunity to build on their seemingly changing philosophy. Let’s take a gander at what players the New Orleans Saints could consider drafting with their first round pick that could help them get better.
