The Darren Sproles saga officially came to an end this morning in New Orleans.
The report first broke early this morning via ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Darren Sproles was being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.
As a result, the New Orleans Saints receive the Eagles’ fifth-round draft pick in this year’s draft, and the Saints saved $3.5 million in salary cap space by trading Sproles. The Saints did have to eat $750,000 in dead money.
Things have turned very sour for Sproles in the past week, as he’s been put through the ringer, so to speak. We didn’t bother bringing you the news surrounding his wife, Michel, and if you care to read that, be my guest. I’ll just say that this is unfortunate it all came to this.
While many may suggest that a fifth-round draft pick wasn’t the compensation expected for Sproles, just remember that the Eagles already have Lesean McCoy as their primary back, and that Darren Sproles is a little older compared the Chris Ivory, who was traded to the New York Jets last year for a fourth-round draft pick.
Sproles will make an immediate impact for the Philadelphia Eagles, and as prior analysts suggest, Chip Kelly has a new ‘toy’ for his offense.
