Well, we’re starting to get wind of more and more reports about the Saints being active in retaining some of their puzzle pieces from 2013.
As per NOLA.com’s Larry Holder:
The Saints have already had early discussions with players like tackle Zach Strief, linebacker Parys Haralson, safety Rafael Bush and wide receiver Joe Morgan with their contracts up in March and there’s interest from each side in re-uniting, according to league sources.
It’s no guarantee the Saints will tender Morgan, but it’s likely the Saints would hope to re-sign Morgan for a less lucrative salary. Morgan missed all of the 2013 season with a knee injury.
Holder suggests the team wants to sign him for less than the low tender of $1.39M.
I had Bush ranked as the #8 Priority and Morgan ranked as the #6 Priority of all Saint players scheduled to become free agents. I have talked at length about Bush, and as free agency keeps unfolding, I believe he will become the starter opposite of Kenny Vaccaro next season.
As for Morgan, here’s what I said back in January:
2014 Outlook: Morgan is a restricted free agent, so someone would have to be willing to pay him. The bad news for Morgan is he’s now had two season ending injuries in three seasons. He’s sadly one more injury away from likely not playing for the Saints. In a crowded and uncertain pool of receivers, Morgan has a good chance to be back with the Saints, but is no lock.
Seems that the Saints know that too, and that’s why I stated that Morgan is potentially someone the Saints will move on from. If Morgan is not retained, be sure to familiarize yourself with Charles Hawkins of the Saints practice squad. He has speed, and could be a deep threat the Saints already have on the roster.
Let’s also remember Andy Tanner, as it this could be a sign that it may be his time finally.
