Here’s another signing that will fly under most radars, but it’s a good one.
The Saints announced that they are bringing back cornerback Trevin Wade to the team. Wade played in a handful of games for the team when he was signed after Jabari Greer went down with his injury.
As an exclusive rights free agent, the Saints had the leg up with Wade if you will. What I mean by that is that as an exclusive rights free agent, the team makes an offer to the player at the three-year veteran minimum salary. That’s it. The player can take it, or leave it, but either way the player is not allowed to negotiate with other teams.
Wade will command a $570,000 price tag for his contract in 2014.
When he first signed on November 19th, I broke a story on Wade highlighting who he was.
Wade’s immediate role for the Saints will be in Special Teams, where his 4.59 40-yard dash could help immensely. He will likely see limited time on the field in Rob Ryan’s defense Thursday, but would serve as a potential Nickel Corner, defending the slot.
Out of a workout, for the team to like what they saw out of him, should be encouraging enough. His role could grow, and as we’ve seen in Rob Ryan’s scheme, how he learns could benefit the Saints. You just never know, and it’s entirely too early to speculate, but look for him on Thursday.
I ranked Wade as the #18 priority for the New Orleans Saints Free Agents.
2014 Outlook: Much like Terrence Frederick, this is what you’ll see with Wade. He’ll be given a chance to at least compete, and could be one of those guys to watch flourish. In a secondary of uncertainty, he has just as much chance as anyone.
