Trevin Wade Signs With Saints – Wait, Who?

Let’s face it, everyone was expecting Nnamdi Asomugah to be signed today, or even a hint that the Saints would be looking at him, or even some type of veteran. Instead, they officially made the move to sign 2nd year cornerback Trevin Wade.
As I mentioned previously in Jabari Greer Replacement Options?, Saints fans should just sit tight.
So, who is Trevin Wade?
Wade is a 5’10, 192-lb, 24-year old cornerback from Austin, Texas. He was a 7th round pick in the 2012 draft, coming from the Arizona Wildcats, where he played from 2007-2011. He had 182 tackles, 12 interceptions, and 2 touchdowns in his collegiate career.
He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, and played in 13 games for them in 2012. He made 17 tackles during the season, and according to Pro Football Focus, he graded negatively on 201 snaps. A shoulder injury would eventually do him in, and with the Browns drafting Leon McFadden, signing Chris Owens, the play of Buster Skrine, and having that other guy named Joe Haden, it put Wade as the odd man out.
The Browns would release Wade with an injury settlement on August 28, 2013, making room for the former Saints undrafted Nebraska linebacker Eric Martin on their 75-man roster.
Wade would workout with the Giants on October 30th, and the Eagles on October 31st, but was never signed.
Here’s what was said about him in the 2012 NFL Combine:
"Wade has had an interesting career, riding a three-year roller coaster leading up to the draft. Initially touted as a top corner prospect after a stellar sophomore season in which he blanketed future pros throughout the Pac-12, Trevin had a down junior year and fell off many radars. He has shown many flashes again as a senior that have propelled him back into the discussion of the draft’s top cornerback prospects. In the end, Wade is a productive cover corner who has the size, footwork and skills to make an impact as a potential starter at the next level. He could be taken as early as the second round."
Wade’s immediate role for the Saints will be in Special Teams, where his 4.59 40-yard dash could help immensely. He will likely see limited time on the field in Rob Ryan’s defense Thursday, but would serve as a potential Nickel Corner, defending the slot.
Out of a workout, for the team to like what they saw out of him, should be encouraging enough. His role could grow, and as we’ve seen in Rob Ryan’s scheme, how he learns could benefit the Saints. You just never know, and it’s entirely too early to speculate, but look for him on Thursday.
