Drew Brees is on, Jimmy Graham is having a great year, and mostly everyone on the Saints seems to have a great game or two. Even Mark Ingram flipped a switch against the Cowboys. But there is one player who has been consistent with his inconsistency: Garrett Hartley. He might just be on his last days.
The New Orleans Saints worked out a group of kickers Tuesday including Neil Rackers, Shayne Graham and Derek Dimke, according to ESPN.
This should come as no surprise as current Saints kicker Garrett Hartley has struggled recently missing four of his last six field-goal attempts. With his recent misses, Hartley is only 72.7 percent on the season in field-goal attempts converting on 16 of his 22 kicks.
Hartley is usually frustrating when things seem to be running smoothly, missing kicks when the game is in the Saints’ hands. He can also come on strong when the team needs him the most, highlighted by his famous 2009 performances against the Vikings and against the Colts.
But, he can’t keep this up. When a car keeps starting and stopping, you don’t keep it around when you have the option of other reliable cars on the market. It doesn’t matter that that car got you from Baton Rouge to New Orleans on less than a quarter tank of gas. What matters to you is from now on and you can’t count on it continuously trucking on that long.
Hartley may still have a role on this team in the future. I’m not saying to completely close the door. But how many times in the past six seasons have we seen him have a few poor games and end up on injured reserve, so that we can sign a John Carney or a John Kasay. Sean Peyton doesn’t appreciate inconsistency, and this season might just be the last straw. Saints fans, you might just see the last of Hartley.
Then again, he’s lasted this long doing the same things year after year…why change a winning formula?
