Offensive Line Costly Mistakes

Of the nine penalties the Saints had yesterday, five of them were credited to the offensive line.

  • Charles Brown (False Start)
  • Jahri Evans (Holding)
  • Ben Grubbs (Illegal Use of Hands)
  • Charles Brown (False Start)
  • Brian de la Puente (Holding)

Normally, this wouldn’t be a huge deal in certain aspects, but the problem ends up being the cause/effect. Jahri Evans is called for holding. Next play? Muhammed Wilkerson sacks Brees. After that? Fumble lost. Now the Saints would go on to score on that drive, but a similar penalty later would turn to be an absolute killer.

By absolute killer, I mean the Brian de la Puente holding call, which negated a Drew Brees to Nick Toon 19-yard hookup with less than 2 minutes to play, and Brees would never complete another pass.

This begs the question, How Much Is Aaron Kromer missed right now? Drew Brees was sacked twice yesterday, but he took massive hits. When you see Drew Brees struggling to get up, there’s a huge problem.

Now, if you ask Drew Brees, he will definitely take a good bit of the blame, like many good leaders do, regardless of who may be at fault. However, these sacks are piling up, and he’s now only 7 away from matching his career high 27 sacks in 2005.
