The New Orleans Saints are on a tear after taking down the Miami Dolphins, and the 4-0 start has some players thinking back to the Super Bowl win from 2009 when the team started 13-0.
It’s not just any player saying these sorts of things — it’s quarterback Drew Brees per ESPN’s Mike Triplett:
“I’d say there’s some similarities in regards to the type of offseason we’ve had, as competitive as it was,” Brees said. “Just that feeling: ‘Man, we can’t wait to get on the field and then show ourselves, show people what we’re about’ and continue to gain confidence and continue to get a little bit better each and every game, too.”
New Orleans is right to look at 2009 for inspiration here. Sean Payton is back, Drew Brees is the frontrunner for MVP is Peyton Manning would stop playing like he’s 26 again and the offense is backed by a spectacular defense thanks to the work Rob Ryan has done so far.
Is there a lot of season left? Yes, but with the way the Saints are playing, as long as the team can stay healthy, it’s not all that unreasonable to be thinking playoffs and more.
