Jonathan Vilma To Land on Short Term IR

With the recent news of WR Robert Meachem being added to the Saints roster, everyone was scattering wondering who would be released. Instead, the rumor is that Jonathan Vilma will be landing on Short Term IR.

Vilma is eligible to return in Week 9 against his former team, the Jets. He’s recovering from a mid-August knee scope. It would have been much bigger news two years ago, as Vilma’s play has slipped while he’s a poor fit for new DC Rob Ryan’s 3-4 scheme. Vilma could return to a part-time role.

Short term IR was introduced as part of the NFL & NFLPA Agreement in 2012, which allows a player to return to the active roster. The player has to be ruled out of practice for unable to play football for a minimum of 6 weeks, and would be eligible to return after Week 8.

With the recent efforts of David Hawthorne, I think a good bit of us can sleep better. We only hope that it translates on the field, and I would be sure we keep an eye out for Ramon Humber.

While the official injury report doesn’t come out until tomorrow, it only makes sense. The Saints could benefit from Vilma returning later in the season (like Victor Butler). We definitely hope the best for Vilma, but his knees are clearly getting the better of him at this point.
