The New Orleans Saints cut down their roster to just 53 men like the rest of the teams in the league on Saturday, and there were some expected moves, but also some surprising ones.
Perhaps the most surprising was seeing rookie Rufus Johnson get the ax. New Orleans is thin at linebacker but simply did not have space for the rookie. If the Saints are lucky he will make it to the practice squad.
Another notable move was the release of receiver Courtney Roby, who has been a fixture on special teams since 2008.
All in all, here is the full list of cuts made Saturday:
Released WR Courtney Roby, DE Jay Richardson, CB Chris Carr, S Jim Leonhard.
Waived QB Ryan Griffin, WR Preston Parker, FB Austin Johnson, WR, Saalim Hakim, G Elliott Mealer, TE Keavon Milton, TE Michael Higgins, G Andrew Tiller, C Jeremiah Warren, LB Ray Shipman, LB Rufus Johnson, DT Isaako Aaitui, S Jerico Nelson, LB Baraka Atkins, T Marcel Jones, CB Korey Lindsey and CB Jumal Rolle. Placed C Eric Olsen on injured reserve.
Expect the Saints to keep making moves as the team could be active on the waiver wire looking for help at linebacker and other positions.
