The New Orleans Saints were required to make cuts in Tuesday to reach the 75-man roster limit. Through a combination of cuts and placing players on the PUP list and Injured Reserve, the Saints reached the 75-man limit by the deadline.
Defensive end Will Smith, wide receiver Joe Morgan and linebacker Chris Chamberlain were all placed on Injured Reserve thanks to season-ending injuries. Linebacker Victor Butler was placed on the PUP list thanks to his torn ACL.
As for cuts, the Saints released linebacker Eric Martin, safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah and receiver Tim Toone. Martin was a victim of too much depth at linebacker, while Owusu-Ansah was an easy one to see coming thanks to rookie Kenny Vaccaro. Toone was also easy to predict with so many other receivers such as Andy Tanner stepping up and having big preseasons.
All in all, not many surprises for the Saints on cut day. Remember that more are on the way Saturday evening as the team will be forced to cut down to 53 players. That day won’t be as predictable.
