New Orleans Saints linebacker Victor Butler tore his ACL after joining the team this offseason via free agency. Many thought that meant the end to Butler’s season, but that may not be the case as the Saints have revealed.
The Saints coaching staff themselves have not straight-up said Butler could return, but the team’ s actions speak volumes. New Orleans was forced to make roster decisions Tuesday to trim the roster to 75 players, and rather than placing Butler on Injured Reserve to end his season, the Saints placed him on the PUP list.
In other words, Butler is eligible to return after Week 6 if he is healthy. At that time the Saints will be forced to make room on the roster.
We live in a time when knee injuries are not as serious as they used to be. ACL tears are common and the recovery period continues to shrink—just ask Adrian Peterson.
Butler could actually return this season, and depending on how Rob Ryan’s new 3-4 defense is looking, he could be a major boost at the perfect time as the Saints potentially make a playoff push.
