The New Orleans Saints presumably entered training camp with a battle at the safety position thanks to the addition of rookie Kenny Vaccaro. Instead it appears defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is finding a way to utilize Vaccaro, Maloclm Jenkins and Roman Harper at the same time.
According to ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas, Vaccaro and Jenkins are seeing time at cornerback this year:
Larry Holder writes that the Saints have been using safeties Malcolm Jenkins and Kenny Vaccaro at nickel cornerback. I think this is more than an experiment. I think one of those two guys will end up being the nickel cornerback. It doesn’t matter that Jenkins and Vaccaro aren’t true cornerbacks. They’re athletic enough to play the nickel position.
We saw Jenkins play corner last year and Vaccaro came advertised as a man who could man both positions if need be.
This is great news for Vaccaro in the short term because it will allow him to see the field a lot as a rookie. However, this also helps Jenkins because his contract is set to expire soon and if he can prove versatile enough the team may extend him rather than let him walk because of Vaccaro’s presence.
We often say it’s too early to take anything away from camp, but this is an easy one. This has been a long time coming and the Saints will be better as a result.
