We’re back after a slow weekend to bring you the latest New Orleans Saints news, rumors and links for the middle of July. The bad news is there still is not too much going on, but the good news is training camp is right around the corner.

Let’s take a look at a few pieces of news.

ESPN Has Some Bad News About the Saints Defense

Per Pat Yasinskas:

Take a look at the individual player rankings for New Orleans’ defense by Pro Football Focus. The Saints have only three defensive players, according to PFF, that are above average. They also have four players that fall into the “poor” category. Makes you wonder if this defense has a shot at being any better than last year.

ESPN Also Examines the OLB Situation Without Victor Butler

Per Pat Yasinskas:

General manager Mickey Loomis worked some minor miracles to get out of a nightmare salary-cap situation in the offseason. But the Saints, who are converting to a 3-4 defensive scheme, didn’t bring in any elite pass-rushers. They thought free agent pickup Victor Butler could blossom into something, but Butler will miss the season after suffering a knee injury during an offseason workout. That leaves the Saints looking to Will Smith, Junior Galette and Martez Wilson as their outside linebackers. Smith is aging and converting from defensive end to linebacker. Wilson and Galette have shown some potential, but neither is a proven pass-rusher.

Finally, ESPN Takes a Look at Mark Ingram Again

Per Pat Yasinskas:

Running back Mark Ingram comes in at No. 16 on the team website’s list of 25 reasons to get excited about training camp. Ingram hasn’t put up big numbers in his first two seasons. Although the backfield remains crowded with Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles, I think the Saints will make a concerted effort to get Ingram more carries this season.
